REQUIREMENTS FOR VOLUNTEERS

From 1 January 2017 most volunteers will be required to obtain a Working with Children Check (WWCC) before commencing volunteer work at the school.  We suggest that potential and current volunteers organize to obtain a WWCC as soon as possible rather than leaving it until the end of the year.  For volunteers a WWCC is free and can be obtained from the Office of the Children’s Guardian at: Office of the Children’s Guardian

From 1 January 2017 to work as a volunteer at St Mary’s you must follow the procedure outlined below.  This applies to all people, including those who may have worked as volunteers at the school prior to 2017.

  • Download and complete the two forms (Form 1 and Form 2) available at the bottom of this page.
  • Alternatively, visit the Front Office of the school and ask for the forms to complete to enable you to work as a volunteer.
  • Form 1 “Checklist for School Volunteers” will enable you to determine if you are exempt from obtaining a WWCC. If you are not exempt, you must obtain a free WWCC before proceeding.
  • Both Forms 1 and 2 must be completed and submitted to the school. Part of Form 2 is a 100 point ID check which is probably most easily done by submitting the forms in person at the Front Office of the school.  However, if you can successfully scan in both completed forms and the appropriate items for the ID check you are welcome to email these to the school Admin email: admin@gatesheadsm.catholic.edu.au clearly indicated in the subject field of the email that this is an application to do volunteer work at the school.
  • The school will process your application and you will be informed when you may commence voluntary work.

Form 2:    WWCC Verification and Declaration Form

Thank you for taking the time to become a volunteer worker at St Mary’s.  We rely on volunteer assistance in many ways - Canteen, School Dances, Sports Coaching, Excursions and so on.  We regret that the process to become a volunteer is now more complicated that it used to be.  This is a result of legislation designed to keep school safe places for children.  Please do not let the added complexity discourage you from volunteering.  Keeping our children safe is of paramount importance.
